Borders

Garden

On the right of the lawns, looking up the hill, are the herbaceous borders. These are planted to make a rainbow of colours. The lower "Cool Border" runs from pink through deep purple to blue, while the upper "Hot Border" border runs from yellow through orange to deep burnt reds. The borders are filled with hundreds of bulbs and in the spring the tulip displays are spectacular.

On the opposite left side of the lawns are the more informal woodland borders, curves rather than stright lines, but planted in matching colours to mirror the formal borders. These are mixed with ornamental trees such as Acer Japonicas and two lovely Magnolia trees.

All of the borders that run across the garden are planted in whites, with different combinations of other colours mixed in. The colour blends throughout the garden are being created gradually by moving existing plants and propagating others, though the result in the summer is not always as intended!

At the top of the garden is a shrub border where the garden blends into the meadow beyond. The currrent project is to add a grass border to the left separating the garden from the old woodland walk, one of the oldest features of the garden and shown on the earliest maps.

There are roses throughout the garden and around the house. A secret rose garden is hidden in a courtyard by the house, planted with yellow scented roses.
