The Flying Horse

Formerly a coaching inn on the Bedford Road the Flying Horse is very ancient. Mentions of an inn on that site go back to early mediaeval times, when it was known as the Talbot Arms. It took the name Flying Horse in the 18th century, probably from the mail coaches. The legend that Dick Turpin stopped here en route to York is, sadly, a fiction.

The Flying Horse is a listed building with a large restaurant and small cosy bar. It has recently (May 2009) been re-opened under new ownership after major rennovation. The restaurant is a barn conversion, which is open plan and very airy. The excellent meals, served by friendly and polite staff, are high quality. The bar offers a good selection of beers and real ales which can be enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere. There are small alcoves for a bit of privacy as well as a wooden bar which creates a traditional feel.
