Garden
The extensive 4 ½ acre garden extends behind the house up the hill and into flower meadow and some small woodland areas. It is mostly surrounded by a high brick and stone wall that is as old as the house and listed in its own right.
The garden is based around a series of terraced lawns climbing the gentle slope of the hill before an Italian wrought iron gate leads into the field beyond. The four lawns are divided by borders and by a ha-ha that marks the original boundary of the gardens up to the 1870s and is crossed by a Victorian iron bridge.
Restoration of the garden is a work in progress and we are only a few years in. Most of the work to date has been clearing overgrown or neglected areas and rearranging plants in the many borders to group them better and make them easier to manage. We are also adding our mark to the garden by creating some new areas, such as the yellow rose garden. Sometimes things work and sometimes they don't. We are learning fast, mostly by trial and error, but are passionate about the garden.
